I've been wondering if ChatGPT can read and understand Word documents (.docx files) directly. Does it have the capability to open and process the content of Word docs if I upload them? Or do I need to convert the content into plain text first? Looking for insights or guides on how to work with Word documents using ChatGPT.

There are third-party tools that convert Word docs to formats compatible with AI models, which you can then feed into ChatGPT. So indirectly, yes.
A good workaround is to save your Word document as a .txt file or copy all the text and then paste it into ChatGPT. It can then analyze, summarize, or answer questions based on that text.
Currently, ChatGPT itself can't directly open or read Word documents. You need to copy the text from the Word file and paste it into the chat for it to understand the content.
I tried uploading a .docx file in ChatGPT and it didn't recognize the format. I switched to PDF and it worked better.
If you're using the ChatGPT Plus with the GPT-4 API that supports file uploads, you might be able to upload Word docs, but in the standard interface, you'll have to convert them to plain text first.
Hope OpenAI adds direct Word doc support soon — it would save a lot of time!
