Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru is preparing to implement fully digitised international passenger movement at its Terminal 2 (T2). Following successful trial runs, the airport aims to become one of the first internationally to adopt this infrastructure, marking a significant shift in how travelers interact with security and immigration checkpoints.
Chief Technical Officer of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), George Fanthome, outlined the operational framework during an exclusive discussion. The process follows the same rubric as Digi Yatra and remains optional for passengers. Only essential minimum data will be utilized, ensuring that a passenger’s digital wallet securely shares verified information with explicit consent at each stage.
Security protocols prioritize data protection, with no central storage of biometrics or full passport data. Biometric data will be encrypted and used solely for identity confirmation during the journey, with strict deletion occurring within 24 hours after travel. Fanthome noted that the technology is designed to remain largely invisible to users, avoiding complicated processes while replacing traditional document checks.
In the context of Indian airports, KIA has acted as a ground zero for this initiative, serving as a pilot study to ascertain the feasibility of the infrastructure. The proof of concepts validated that digital identity wallets can function seamlessly in real-world airline and airport environments.

KIA has validated that digital identity wallets can function seamlessly in real-world airline environments, establishing a proof of concept for secure data sharing.
This approach balances operational efficiency with privacy by eliminating long-term biometric storage, which addresses common security concerns.
However, the long-term success depends on widespread passenger adoption of the optional system across other Indian airports.
